Loosely organized bicycling association in Mathews County, VA. No meetings, no structure --- just an agreement to try to show up once in a while at the times and places posted on this web site. Our only rule is that you must wear a helmet to ride. We have tested several helmets severely and find that it is much better to break them than your head.
If you would like information about our non-organization, please contact mike@mathewsfreewheelers.org
We will be adding information on bicycling routes in Mathews over time. To view our blog, click here!
Spring Rides 2008
Sundays
Start time 2 PM!
Spring rides will usually be between 25 and 45 miles, pace determined by riders present. On most Sundays the computer average will be between 16 and 18 miles an hour and ride speeds will include some 20mph+ stretches.
There will be occasional rides at other times or places that will be announced here when possible.
Thursdays
Meet at the parking garage in Yorktown, lower level. Start time 5 PM
This is usually a fairly fast ride but consists of multiple loops making it possible for regrouping at points throughout the ride. Computer average generally between 17 and 19mph, occasional stretches at 22mph+
After ride debriefing at the Riverwalk restaurant bar.

Sprint to the Top!
This is the sprint to the top of one of the two hills on our Sunday ride. As you can see the grade is awesome, perhaps as much as 0.5% and the length is arduous, 100 feet or more. Dale claims to have won but Rodney and Jack have room to argue. Mike is bringing up the rear. Alex, who took the photo, obviously got to the top first, though.

As you can probably tell, Mathews County is basically flat. When you need a break from hills come and ride with us!
Sunday Ride information:
1) All riders must wear a helmet.
2) Rides are generally between 20 and 40 miles and vary from week to week
3) Sunday rides tend to average between 16 and 18mph but we work harder to keep the group together on Sundays than on our other rides. We will try to make sure that anyone who shows up has someone to ride with so that no one gets lost.
4) Most of the ride will be on less traveled roads but there is always some portion of the ride on either Route 14 or Route 198 which are more heavily traveled and require caution.
